Holt Honored With Life Improved Award Honorable Mention

From left, RiverLedge Administrator Timothy Parsons, Rebecca Holt & Madison Brossoit, who nominated Ms. Holt

OGDENSBURG - Finding fun activities for those in the dementia unit at any skilled nursing facility is a challenge faced by facilities across the country.

It's also a challenge that Rebecca Holt, a CNA at RiverLedge Health Care & Rehabilitation Center has taken on with enthusiasm.

"Rebecca currently is in charge of activities on our dementia unit," wrote Assistant Director of Nursing Madison Brossoit, when nominating Ms. Holt for a Life Improved Award. "She has a calming approach with the residents and Rebecca brings about a positive atmosphere and work environment on the unit."

The challenge though, isn't just one she tackles while at work.

"She goes home and does her own research on dementia to help her better understand dementia and to help improve the care she can provide to the residents," Ms. Brossoit wrote. "With the information that she learns, she brings it back to work and implements it into her daily routine with the residents. She goes the extra mile every day for the residents and it shows."

Potsdam Boy Brings Easter Cheer to Maplewood

CANTON – Going on a shopping spree would be almost any child’s dream come true. Running up and down the aisles filling their cart with toys and games would make any child laugh and squeal with delight.

Margaret Chamberlain hugs Ethan Mills after receiving an Easter gift bag.
Ethan Mills, 8, of Potsdam recently went on a shopping spree, but instead of buying things for himself, he was filling his cart with slipper socks, adult coloring books, pudding cups and more for the residents at Maplewood Health Care & Rehabilitation Center.

All together, Ethan with the help of his mother, Keala Richardson and his grandmother, Tammy-Jo Perrin created 144 gift bags which were distributed at Maplewood Wednesday morning.

Wearing his Sunday best with bunny ears atop his head and sometimes hopping like a rabbit, Ethan went up to each resident and said, “Happy Easter” before handing them a gift bag.

Nearly all of the residents said thank you with a smile on their face. Many of the residents hugged Ethan and a few even planted a kiss on his cheek or hand. It was hard to tell who was more excited by the gesture, the residents or Ethan.

“This is what it’s all about,” said Maplewood Activities Leader Patience Boswell. “Seeing his reaction, as well as the reaction of the residents makes me tear up.”

When asked what prompted the gesture, Ms. Perrin explained, every year since Ms. Richardson was a small girl the family has done a community service project together.

“Kaela grew up going to the Potsdam nursing home, because I was a nurse there,” Ms. Perrin said, adding the tradition actually began one year when her daughter was being particularly “bratty.”

“One Christmas she was being a brat, so we made her pick a charity to give her presents to, all but one,” Ms. Perrin said. “My mother taught me that no matter how much or how little you have, you always give to others.”

Since Ethan began participating in the projects a few years ago, other beneficiaries of his work have included local animal shelters and Renewal House. “Our goal is to be able to help even more people,” Ms. Richardson said. “Maybe next year, we can visit this home and another.”

Ethan, who is homeschooled, also happens to be Autistic and suffer from cyclic vomiting syndrome.

“A lot of people sorry for him, because he’s sick, but we hate that,” Ms. Perrin said. “We treat him like he’s a regular kid and hope that other people can see him like that too.”

Ethan said his favorite part of the project is meeting other people and seeing the smiles on their faces.

“This is something that helps get him out of the house and interacting with other people,” Ms. Richardson said, noting social interaction is something that many children with Autism have a difficult time with.

In addition to one large scale project each year, Ms. Richardson said Ethan participates in several smaller projects throughout the year. While Ms. Richardson said they would be open to accepting donations, she said they’ve never actually sought them out. “It almost makes it more rewarding when it’s something you do yourself,” she said.

To allow people to follow Ethan and his efforts, as well as receive updates on his every day life, a Facebook page called Ethan and Jayden’s (his favorite teddy bear) Journey has been set up and can be “liked” by visiting www.facebook.com/ethansreality.

Aldrich Honored With Life Improved Honorable Mention

From left, Physical Therapist Megan Morrison, who nominated Rehab Aide Deb Aldrich, and Director of Therapy Services Terry Miccelli

OGDENSBURG - As an assistant coach for the Ogdensburg Free Academy Boys Basketball Team, Megan Morrison knows a thing or two about what makes a great team player.

Although she may not collect rebounds or shoot threes, Ms. Morrison said Deb Aldrich is always there with an assist when needed.

"She goes above and beyond every single day," Ms. Morrison said. "She is always available to help out any of the therapy staff at a moment's notice with a smile."

And much like a big man with ball handling skills, her background as a CNA makes Ms. Aldrich a double threat.

"When bringing residents to/from therapy sessions she will also help the nursing staff as needed due to her background as a CNA," Ms. Morrison said. "She is the definition of a team player, and she never hesitates when asked to do more."

Most importantly though, Ms. Morrison said Ms. Aldrich is loved and trusted by the residents.

For these reason and more, Ms. Aldrich was selected as a Winter 2017 Life Improved Award Honorable Mention recipient.

"The residents all love her and trust that when she is part of their treatment sessions they will be in good hands," Ms. Morrison said. "As a new grad PT, I have used Deb's services quite a bit with more challenging residents and her poise and reassurance for residents who may be attempting hard things in therapy impresses me always."

Crossett Honored With Life Improved Honorable Mention

From left, Dawn Crossett, Betsy Porter, who nominated Ms. Crossett and Mosaic Administrator Michele Montroy
OGDENSBURG - Mosaic has a four person payroll department that handles the processing of time sheets, the bringing on of new hires, fingerprinting and more for the department's 500 plus employees.

When one member of that team is unavailable things can get hectic, but for a several week stretch last year that four person department was down to two.

Someone had to step up and Dawn Crossett did.

"In November, our department was faced with unfortunate circumstances for two of our four staff. One staff member was facing a potential life-threatening health diagnosis and the other was enduring end life for a loved one," wrote Administrative Assistant Betsy Porter. "Both requiring substantial time away from work."

Those circumstances left Ms. Porter and Ms. Crossett as the only two employees in a department that is often busy when running at full strength.

"Dawn dug her heals along side of me to make sure payroll was complete and checks were distributed," Ms. Porter wrote. "Additionally, she helped me cover eight sessions of fingerprinting weekly, work skills assessments, job postings, meetings, orientations for new staff, payroll questions - all of this in addition to completing our own full-time job assignments."

Ms. Crossett's willingness to step up showcased the type of person she is, one who lives by the United Helpers's Life Improved mantra and that is why she was recognized with an honorable mention Life Improved Award.

"I truly would not have made it through this five weeks without her dedication and help. Dawn never hesitated or complained of the workload. She just jumped in and made sure things got done," Ms. Porter wrote. " I am beyond thankful that I had Dawn by my side. This is why I truly believe she deserves this honor."

Alberto Honored With Life Improved Honorable Mention

Lisa Alberto with Program Manager
Brady Dullea

RENSSELAER FALLS - When one of the residents at the Rensselaer Falls IRA mentioned to Lisa Alberto that the walls in their kitchen were kind of bare, Ms. Alberto took it upon herself to make the kitchen more homey.

When a resident of the Rensselaer Falls IRA is celebrating their birthday, Ms. Alberto, who works as a cook at the house will make them a birthday, but not just a plain cake, often she will make a cake personalized to that person's special day.

For these reasons and more, Ms. Alberto was recently selected as an honorable mention Life Improved Award recipient.

"Lisa is extremely effective in her position," wrote Program Manager Brady Dullea. " She is a very skilled chef, she is organized, efficient, and she is very proficient in utilizing benefit cards to their maximum potential.  These things alone make her a valuable member of the team, but more than these things, Lisa truly cares about making life better for the people she serves."

Referencing her efforts to make homes kitchen truly feel like home, Mr. Dullea wrote, "When a program member mentioned that the walls of the kitchen didn't have a lot of decoration, Lisa came up with an idea for a hand prints display, she then helped everyone living at the IRA to complete one and add it to the wall."

Personalized birthday cakes though are a specialty of Ms. Alberto's and past efforts have included a butterfly cake and even a three-dimensional frog cake.

"These cakes make their day feel that much more special," he wrote, adding the residents aren't the only beneficiary of her caring persona.

"Even on the days she doesn't work she usually has much of the prep work of meals for that day done," he said. "She consistently goes above and beyond and truly has providing the best life possible to those at United Helpers as her number one priority."

Porter & Knowlton Honored With Life Improved Honorable Mention

From left, Betsy Porter, Amy Jennings, Heidi Knowlton & Mosaic Administrator Michele Montroy
OGDENSBURG - United Helpers is in the business of taking care of people. Whether it be the elderly, mentally ill, developmentally disabled or even someone recovering from an injury or surgery, taking care of people is what we do.

Two United Helpers employees Elizabeth "Betsy" Porter and Heidi Knowlton have even taken that caring for others to the next level by helping to organize several fundraisers for a fellow employee who had been diagnosed with cancer.

"I would like to Nominate Heidi Knowlton and Betsy Porter," that employee, Amy Jennings wrote in her nomination. "They have been absolutely amazing through all of this so far.  I am not done with my treatments yet, but I know that Heidi & Betsy will remain by my side."

While Ms. Porter and Ms. Knowlton aren't the only United Helpers employees who have been by her side during this difficult journey, Ms. Jennings said their efforts have stood out.

"I have had a lot of support from the employee's at UH, friends and family but Heidi and Betsy have been the most outstanding," she said.
