Memory of Shirley Wells lives on through Estate Donation

Shirley M. Wells
The memory of Shirley M. Wells, who passed away at the age of 89 in Canton in 2013, will live on at United Helpers thanks to her generous estate donation which will support the United Helpers Endowment Fund.

Mrs. Wells chose to donate her home to the Society of the United Helpers and the proceeds from the sale will go to the Endowment Fund which ensures the long-term viability of the organization.

"We are very grateful that Mrs. Wells chose to donate her home to the Society of the United Helpers,” Director of Development Lori Smithers said.

Shirley M. Wells left her home to United Helpers.
Mrs. Wells, wife of the late John H. Wells of Canton, was extremely active in the local community.

Working as a Kindergarten and 3rd Grade teacher for 21 years in Canton, Mrs. Wells was always looking for other ways to give back. One of those ways included her musical abilities.

Society of the United Helpers Board Member Marti MacArthur said, “Shirley was always interested in music and was in a choir of some sort her whole life.”

Mrs. Wells was also known for her talent on the piano and she would frequent a variety of organizations, including United Helpers facilities, to share her gift.

Mrs. MacArthur said, “Music was a very big part of Shirley’s life.”

Mrs. Wells and her husband began building their home in Canton in the 1950’s and finished it in the 90’s.

“Her husband was a craftsman,” Mrs. MacArthur said, “and they built their home lovingly with precision and beauty.”

Mrs. Wells passed away on May 3, 2013, at the United Helpers Maplewood Campus.
