United Helpers Launching Running Analysis Service

OGDENSBURG – Are you a runner recovering from an injury, or do you experience pain when you run? If you can answer yes to either of these questions, perhaps a running analysis with United Helpers’ RiverLedge Outpatient Physical Therapy can help you return to the sport you love, minus the pain.

Runners of all ages are welcome to book their appointment with Megan Morrison, PT, DPT. Ms. Morrison will conduct an hour-long evaluation that includes filming running mechanics on a treadmill from the left, right and posterior angles. In some instances, runners may also be filmed from the front.

Following a brief run, Ms. Morrison will analyze the footage and make recommendations that may lead to a reduction or even elimination of low back, leg, knee, ankle, or foot pain while running.

Recommendations may include adjustments to the runner’s stride, the way they land, or providing exercises to stretch or strengthen their core, hips, knees or ankles.

“It’s nice to be able to look at a runner frame by frame to identify impairments which could be causing them pain,” she said. “Even if it’s a really small thing, it can become compounded over time and throughout their training.”

Fees for the running analysis are $75 for the initial visit and $50 for follow-up visits for runners without a prescription for physical therapy.  Runners with a diagnosed injury and a physical therapy script may also have the cost of services covered in part by their insurance.

“Part of being a successful runner is learning how to read what your body is telling you,” Ms. Morrison said, adding that the frame by frame analysis and review that she’s able to provide can help runners do just that.

Spread out over seven acres with more than 300,000 square feet of pathways the "1st Annual Community Corn Maze" at The Family Farm on Route 58 in Morristown (where many other fun activities, including a hay ride, will also be held) is sure to delight and amaze children, teens, their parents and even grandparents.

Community Broadcasters Operations Manager and 95.3 The Wolf On-Air Personality Tony Lynn hides behind the corn during a sneak peak of the Community Corn Maze last weekend.

Order of Eastern Star Host Lunch to Honor UH Veterans

Ogdensburg – Veterans from United Helpers’ Maplewood and RiverLedge campuses came together Monday afternoon for a luncheon in their honor hosted at the Dobisky Visitor’s Center by the St. Lawrence District Order of the Eastern Star.

District Grand Lecturer Mark Ginn said one of the tasks given to the grand lecturer each year is to do something for veterans in their district.

“I approached the area nursing homes and asked them what we could do,” Mr. Ginn said.

Once it was decided that the Order of the Eastern Star would host a picnic to pay their respects and say thank you to veterans from United Helpers’ two skilled nursing facilities, Mr. Ginn said he then had to come up with money to pay for the picnic.

That’s where the St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union came into play.

St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union President/CEO Todd Mashaw, himself a veteran, authorized a $1,000 contribution from the credit union to fund the event.

As lunch was wrapping up each veteran in attendance was introduced with one, Carl Seymour, a Navy Veteran now residing at Maplewood speaking on behalf of the group.

“On behalf of all us veterans here from both Maplewood and RiverLedge I want to say thank you,” Mr. Seymour said. “This means more to us than you will ever know.”

UH Puts Hub on Hold

For nearly one hundred and twenty years United Helpers has risen to meet the emerging health and human service needs of St. Lawrence County. Our priority as a company has been to create a strong and unique network of community services for the people of the North Country. We are proud to contribute to more than 1800 lives every day.

St. Lawrence County is one the poorest counties in NYS and our economic challenges are many. One of the most significant issues facing our county is the lack of employment opportunities. In response to this issue, United Helpers created Sparx, a for-profit company focused on improving our local economy and in turn, preserving and creating new jobs.

In 2012, United Helpers purchased and renovated the current Sparx headquarters located at 91 Main Street in Canton; a formerly empty building on Main Street, Sparx now houses over thirty employees and is driving revenue back into the local economy.

To date, Sparx has focused on providing a unique package of back office services to small businesses and community organizations (human resources, information technology, payroll and accounting), renting professional office space, and researching job opportunities that play to our County’s strengths. Local innovation and collaboration are the focus of our efforts.

One of the opportunities Sparx investigated is a food HUB and meat-processing center. The idea being that St. Lawrence County produces the “raw material”, but does not reap the value-added benefits (jobs) of processing. Significant time and resources was devoted to researching the HUB and we have concluded that the idea does present a “transformational” opportunity for our community’s economy.
However, Health Care Reform, and the many initiatives that are connected with Health Care Reform, call for an “All Hands-On Deck” effort and require United Helpers to focus on our long-term health care strategy. While disappointing for many reasons, continued exploration into the food HUB and processing center have been postponed while we address Health Care Reform.

As always, United Helpers looks forward to continuing its partnerships with community agencies and working with others to help St. Lawrence County reach its economic potential.
