Recycle old clothes and fabrics!

Starting Nov. 15 people across New York will participate in "America Recycles Day." This year there will be a special focus on promoting awareness about reusing or recycling textiles called "Clothes The Loop NY."

Here in St. Lawrence County "Clothes The Loop NY" will last for one week, from Nov. 15 to 22.

Organized through the Local Living Venture, the project is being run through various thrift stores across the county. With help from the Environmental Management Council, St. Lawrence Solid Waste Department and the Development Authority of the North Country, the items not wanted by thrift stores will be taken to recycling, re-use and rag facilities around the state.

For more information, and to find out where you can drop off your old fabrics, log onto the Sustainable Living Project.

In the US, roughly 85 percent of unwanted textiles are left to rot in landfills. Only 15 percent are donated to thrift stores. With the average American throwing away 70 pounds of unwanted fabric each year, there's a lot to go around! Let's make a difference by changing our disposal habits.
